With several inches of snow and frigid bitter temps saturating New York, it takes bravery to run outside. But with killer work loads after the new year, burning stress (and extra calories) has never been more important. Getting creative about your workouts will inspire you to stay on track with your training program until spring gets here. Until then, time to hit a treadmill. The upside to running inside: you have less chance of slipping on ice or getting slush in your shoes. The downside: gyms get stuffy, over crowded and if you go at peak times (between 5-7pm) chances are you’ll have to fight someone for a treadmill. Let’s face it, sometimes working out in cold winter climates is bleak at best. But there’s hope yet–spring is on its way. Stock up on the best running gear for your first, glorious slush-free run outside. Here’s two must-have items coming spring 2011 to get you started, coming soon at GoLite.com.
Running Jackets for Women: Post Canyon Softshell; $100
The Post Canyon softshell jacket combines high performance with versatility. It’s the perfect spring layer for trail runs, long hikes, or wearing as a light jacket over other layers. It’s made of recycled polyester and spandex so it’s extremely breathable, wicking sweat as you go. It provides a wide range of motion letting you work your upper body to the max. Zippered pocks make an ideal storage place for house keys or your iPod if you like to run with music. Tighter wrist cuffs stop annoying movements. It’s fitted to your body with flattering curves making you look and feel sleek during your run.
I wear mine under my larger winter jacket on long hikes around Lake Superior in Minnesota, and it makes a great under layer for added warmth without inhibiting my move-ability. My favorite thing is it’s wind resistance, which makes trail hiking
Running Shirts for Women: Vista Ridge Shortsleeve Run Top; $34
The Vista Ridge is a performance trail running shirt with an extremely simple design. It’s fitted, but not too tight around the waist making a solid spring under layer or a summer stand alone running shirt. It’s slightly longer than most running shirts so the relaxed fit becomes even more apparent when you hit the trail. I prefer the cap sleeve but if you like even more movement, or are looking for a hot-weather shirt, try it in the sleeveless design. I wear the Vista Ridge to the gym now and in the gym’s warm winter environment it wicks sweat (without sweat stains). The best part: its small, zippered key pocket on the right side. I never know what to do with my apartment key when I run outside (tie it to my shoelace and risk losing it?) but the Vista solved that problem. I know it’s safely stashed for the duration of my run.
